Bay Area EV Charger Installation
A Dedicated Circuit, a Full Charge, Every Morning
If you're driving an EV in the San Francisco Bay Area and relying on a standard 120-volt outlet at home, you already know the problem. A full charge takes 40 to 60 hours, depending on the vehicle. For most daily drivers, that setup stops being workable pretty quickly.
A Level 2 charger (a 240-volt EVSE, or electric vehicle supply equipment) runs on the same type of circuit as a clothes dryer and typically delivers a full charge overnight. The installation requires a licensed electrical contractor, the right panel capacity, and sometimes a service upgrade before the charger goes in. Cobalt Power Systems Inc handles EV charger installation from our Mountain View facility, with the same in-house team managing solar design, PG&E interconnection, and electrical service upgrades.

What the Installation Covers
EV charger installation is an electrical project first. The charger (a Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint Home Flex, or another EVSE) mounts to the wall and runs on a dedicated 240-volt circuit. What varies by property is where the circuit has to come from and what work it takes to get there.
Every installation we complete includes:
- Site assessment
- Dedicated 240V circuit
- EVSE mounting and wiring
- Permit and inspection
Every step is handled by a licensed contractor. This covers any associated panel work.
When Your Panel Needs More Capacity
Older homes in Mountain View, Los Altos, and Palo Alto frequently run on 100-amp service panels, designed long before homes included EV chargers, heat pumps, and battery backup systems. If your panel is already loaded, adding a 50-amp circuit for a Level 2 charger isn't possible without an upgrade.
We handle electrical service upgrades in-house. You don't need to hire a separate electrician before calling us. We assess the panel during the site visit, quote any necessary upgrade as part of the same proposal, and handle PG&E coordination ourselves. For homes that need an upgrade, this is the part of the job most EV charger installers don't want to touch. We've been doing it for 20-plus years.
EV Charging and Solar: One System
If your home already has solar, or you're planning to add it, the charger becomes part of a larger equation. Charging your EV during peak solar production hours draws from the panels rather than the grid. Paired with a Tesla Powerwall, the system stores that production so you're charging the car in the evening without pulling from PG&E at peak rates.
We design these as a single package. Your system designer considers your energy profile, driving habits, utility rate plan, and roof production when sizing the solar and storage components. You won't get a solar proposal from one company and an EV charger from another. We handle it under one roof, with one team managing permits and utility interconnection from start to finish.
What Happens from Initial Proposal to Final Walkthrough
When you reach out to us, the first meeting is a proposal, not a closing pitch. Your system designer schedules a site visit, checks the panel and charging location, and returns with a written scope and price. If a service upgrade is needed, it's included in the same proposal.
From there, we pull permits, schedule the installation crew, and handle the PG&E side of any utility paperwork. A standalone EV charger installation is typically completed in one day. If it's part of a larger solar or storage project, we coordinate the timeline so everything comes together in the right sequence.
Your designer stays with the project through completion, which means you have a named contact for questions at any point, not a general customer service line. It's how we've run jobs since 2003, and it's why most of our new customers come to us through a referral. See what our customers say about their experience from the first site visit through the final walkthrough.
Frequently Asked Questions About EV Charger Installation
The following are the questions we hear most often before a site visit. The answers below reflect how we approach the work: no sales framing, just what you need to know.
What Is a Level 2 EV Charger, and Do I Need One?
A Level 2 charger operates on 240 volts and delivers a full charge to most EVs in 4 to 12 hours overnight, depending on the vehicle's onboard charging capacity. A standard 120-volt outlet takes 40 to 60 hours for the same result. For a primary vehicle, Level 2 is the practical standard for home charging.
Do I Need a Permit to Install an EV Charger in the Bay Area?
In Mountain View, Palo Alto, and most Bay Area cities, a dedicated 240-volt circuit requires a permit and inspection. We pull the permits as part of every install and coordinate inspection scheduling. You won't need to manage the permit process on your end.
What If My Electrical Panel Doesn't Have Enough Capacity?
That depends on your panel and what else is drawing from it. If there's no room for a dedicated 50-amp circuit, we assess both options at the site visit: a load-sharing device that shares capacity with other circuits, or a full electrical service upgrade. The right path depends on your panel, the charger you've selected, and whether solar or battery storage is part of the plan.
How Does an EV Charger Work with a Solar System?
Yes. If you have solar or plan to add it, your EV charger ties into the same home energy system. We design solar, battery storage, and EV charging as a combined package, so your system designer handles the full scope in a single proposal rather than coordinating across multiple contractors.
How Long Does EV Charger Installation Take?
A standalone EV charger installation is typically completed in one day. Projects involving a service upgrade or integrated solar and battery work take longer. The timeline depends on permitting and scheduling, which we manage from the first proposal through final inspection sign-off.

“When I began looking into solar, it soon became apparent that I needed some help due to the complexity of this type of investment, as well as with the various tax incentives available to solar PV customers. Luckily, I was referred to Drew Johnson at Cobalt who helped immensely with this tedious and initially confusing decision. Drew not only helped in the initial decision process, but was involved throughout the entire engagement which provided me with great peace of mind. The installation went exactly as forecast and my Cobalt Project Manager Vince even helped to arrange some additional electrical work needed for my new high speed PEV charger. Cobalt was reliable, effective, and knew how to get things done. They made this a very simple and satisfying experience and we now enjoy the free power from our new PV solar panels every day”- Gil
